Easy Ways to Get Makeup Stains Out of Carpet

If you have carpeting in your home, you know the many ways you can get stains. While it is common to have red wine or spaghetti sauce spill on carpets, you also have the risk of spilling makeup. Unfortunately, this can happen whether you are applying your makeup or accidentally drop your favorite lipstick on the carpet while putting it in your purse. Luckily, there are some ways to clean up the makeup and remove the stains.

Blot Up Liquid Makeup First

There are two main categories of makeup, liquid and non-liquid. Many makeup products that have liquid in them are oil-based, though not always. With liquid makeup spills, one of the first things you need to do is blot it up. Hopefully you will catch the spill while the makeup is still wet. Makeup products like liquid eyeliner and liquid foundation will often remain on the top surface of the carpet, giving you ample time to blot it up. Use a clean, dry towel or paper towels to start lifting it from the carpet. Only blot and never rub it in, or you make the stain worse. Keep rotating the towel until you have lifted as much of it as possible.

Clean Oil-Based Makeup With Rubbing Alcohol

When you are done blotting up your makeup, you will next need to use rubbing alcohol on it. This is appropriate for all oil-based makeup, whether it is liquid or not. For example, not only will your cream foundation likely have oil, but your lipstick may be oil-based as well. This cleaning product also works on lipstick even though it isn't a liquid makeup product. You want to get straight rubbing alcohol that is not diluted and pour a small amount of it to a dry towel. Begin dabbing at the makeup with the alcohol-soaked towel with the same blotting motion as before. You should start to see the stain lift. Another cleaning product that works with oil-based makeup is dry cleaning solvent.

Use Detergent On Powder and Dry Makeup Stains

If the makeup is not oil-based and is in powdered form, you can start by attempting to vacuum up as much of it as possible. This includes makeup like powder foundation, blush, eye shadow, and bronzer. After vacuuming up as much of the powder as possible, you can then add some liquid laundry detergent to a spray bottle with cold water in it. Give it a good shake and spray it on the stain directly. Make sure you are not using detergent with bleach o any harsh chemicals, as it might discolour your carpeting. After leaving the detergent on the stain for a few minutes, get a towel and start dabbing at the stain to lift it from the carpet. Repeat the process with just water to rinse away the detergent, then let it dry.

If you are having trouble removing the stain, consider hiring a carpet cleaning service. This is helpful for all types of makeup stains.
